Ahh, winter time is almost over, and do you know what that means? It means that it’s time to dismantle the nest on the sofa (you know..that corner with all of the blankets, pillows, and we are right in the middle of it all). That’s just the beginning, for Spring is all about fresh and it’s time to get our home fresh and enjoy the personal renewal in the process. In our last
Let’s start by getting mentally ready to tackle spring cleaning by thinking of the benefits that await us:
Clutter = stress
A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience reported that “Multiple stimuli present in the visual field at the same time compete for neural representation by mutually suppressing their evoked activity throughout visual cortex, providing a neural correlate for the limited processing capacity of the visual system.” In layman’s terms, when we see too much stuff in your space, you’ll have a harder time giving your attention to any one thing for a significant period of time. However, by spring cleaning our space, there are fewer stimuli wearing us down, and our mind will be better able to focus, problem-solve, and even to relax. A clean house lightens the mood too.
Breathe better
There is a lot of dust hiding in and around the cracks and crevices that have been dormant all winter. Sure, the pollen is kicking up, however, the dust is beginning to as well, as we become more active with the warming weather and long-awaited sunshine. Those of us prone to allergies and asthma attacks will have fewer triggers as dust and pet dander are removed. It’s also easier to relax without allergens.
Increased productivity
Let’s look at the obvious, first. Once everything is cleaned and organized, things are easier to find, right? That alone saves loads of time. Also knowing that (1) there is a place for everything and (2) everything is in its place, it’s so much easier to focus on everything else in our lives. This goes for any space in the house from the kitchen counter to the workspace desk. Removing clutter enables the brain to better filter information too.
Sneak-attack exercise
I say sneak attack because we are exercising without “intending” to exercise. Put on some upbeat music, sing, and shake your booty with wild abandon as you make your home a refuge once again. Every task and every chore are burning calories. See Calories Burned Spring Cleaning. After a vigorous day of cleaning, we may find a need and deep appreciation for a hot bath to finish off the day. That alone is a tribute to the work we put in for the day.
Accomplishment
Finally, let’s enjoy that feeling of accomplishment. First, there’s that clean fresh smell in every room. Next is everything nice and tidy. We look around and say “yep – I did this“.
