We’ve been having a lot of fun this year in helping our customers find ways to handle their in-between maid service cleanings without having to store an arsenal of chemicals. One of the latest trends is essential oils for many different uses. These natural yet powerful oils have so many benefits, one of them being a natural alternative to chemicals. Today, we pay homage to Lemon Essential Oil and its many benefits. If you’re new to essential oil use, lemon oil is a great option to get started. Consider it your “gateway oil.”

One note when learning about these cleaning ideas, essential oils are corrosive to plastic, so you always want to use glass bottles for your homemade cleaners. I’m especially fond of sprayers added to mason jars, myself.

Sanitize your toothbrush

Add a drop of lemon oil to your toothbrush about once a week to sanitize and deodorize. The added benefit is keeping your own mouth fresh and clean, too.

Gum stuck in your hair

Oh the horror! Keep the scissors in the drawer and work a few drops of lemon oil into the gum to loosen it from the hair. Add a little more at a time if you need it until you can pull the gum free.

Hand Washing

Save on the hand sanitizer and just rub a couple of drops on your hands. Lemon juice is a natural sanitizer on its own.

Hard floors

Add 5-10 drops of lemon essential oil and 1/4 cup of white vinegar to a mop bucket of water. If your floors are especially dirty, add a few drops of dish soap to help cut through the grime.

Greasy marks

Use 1-2 drops of lemon essential oil to erase oily marks left behind by gum, oil, grease, or crayons.

Ear buds

Have you ever tried to clean earwax off of earbuds? Eww! Lemon oil to the rescue! Add a little oil to a cotton swab and watch it clean right off.

Glass stovetop cleaner

This is a powerful and gentle scrub perfect for glass stovetops. Make a paste with baking soda and water with a few drops of lemon essential oil. Use with a sponge or cloth and rinse away when done.

All purpose cleaner

This cleaner works on most household surfaces.

Combine 1 cup of water with 1/2 cup white vinegar in a glass spray bottle. Add 15 drops of lemon essential oil. Swirl it around and it’s ready to use.

Scuff mark scrubber
(alternative to Magic Eraser)

Apply a little lemon oil to a soft cloth to clean away scuff marks, pencil, crayon, and grimy finger prints from hard surfaces. It is actually gentler than the magic eraser on painted walls and won’t rub off the paint.

Rusty knives

Remove rust from your knives by soaking them in a mixture of water and lemon oil

Stinky towels

For those towels that smell fruity no matter what you try – try this! Use lemon oil to freshen up your dingy, mildew towels. Just add in your lemon essential oil with borax, washing soda, and vinegar.

Dishes

Add a couple of drops to your dish water or the floor of the dishwasher for a sparkling clean finish (no need to purchase extra products for this).

Sponges

Soak sponges and dish cloths overnight in a bowl of water with 1 to 2 drops of lemon essential oil to kill germs.
